In the spring of 2015 the polymath Gunter Grass passed away at the ripe old age of 87. The creator of the ‘Danzig Trilogy’, his work took on both a cathartic and critical look at pre and post WW2 Germany with specific reference to the rise of Nazism and how the next generation came to terms with the sins of the fatherland, or didn’t. In his most acclaimed novel The Tin Drum there’s a striking leitmotif where the kinder of what was then Danzig (now Gdańsk) taunt and terrorise their playmates with a Grimm like nursery rhyme. ‘Here comes the witch, black as pitch’ they scream, inducing panic and nightmares among a youth that will soon affix ribbons on their arms, salute a pathetic failed artist as their führer and send millions of Jews into the gas chambers. It’s symbolism, though heavy handed, is stark. It reminds us that the witch is always coming, that she is inescapable, but more importantly that we need to take heed when there are signs of societal disharmony. Especially when we are already marked and thirsty for new wars.

And that’s what this is about.
